Restructuring the Neonatal Unit, Bonassama, Cameroon

Bonassama hospital is a suburban district hospital in a poor and fast growing sector of the harbour city Douala, Cameroon. The hospital is geographically separated from the town by a single, usually crowded bridge that experiences frequent traffic jams.

Our project is providing assistance in restructuring the hospital’s pediatric section, particularly its Neonatology Unit. In order to favor local ‘ownership’, the assistance is realized in cooperation with the financial support of the township of Bonassama and of the district hospital.

With support from the University Hospitals of Geneva, Switzerland, we have also created a new section for Kangaroo Care, with a baby changing facility under a radiant heater and three beds where mothers can rest during Kangaroo Care. Toilets, showers and sinks are now functional, and two external lavatories have been created, so that mothers in the Kangaroo Care program can wash nappies/diapers. These lavatories are now largely used by the entire hospital.
